TLA rolled out their new Feedvertising service today. Feedvertising enables publishers to run text link ads in their RSS feed. Feedvertising can display ads from TLA, publishers' in-house ads, or affiliate links. They even have a WordPress 2.0 plugin to make setup relatively easy. An extra bonus is that TLA can even sell RSS text link ads for you. Which is great because Google RSS ads are still in beta (the last I heard) and Yahoo RSS ads don't seem to work with WordPress/FeedBurner-powered sites.
I set-up my Feedvertising account, installed the plugin, and inserted the code on my site, but so far all I'm getting is a rectangle box with no ad inside at the bottom of my post (see below right after the "post it" meta info on my single post page). Nothing appears to be showing in my RSS feed either. The documentation indicates it could take an hour for the text link to appear, but it has been over three hours now. Still nothing (I'll update this post as soon as I figure out what's going on). In addition, the Feedvertising plugin breaks my blog layout when I have short posts, which results in a big empty space right before where the Feedvertising ad is suppose to go.
Update: I can see the RSS text ad running now. However, the ad leader say, "Advertisement" when I had it set to custom, "Testing" I also selected two slots for my test, but only one is showing. Not sure if the ad slots rotate or there's a glitch.
I recently posted about the phpAdsNew ad server I have been playing with. From what I can tell, phpAdsNew ad server offers more functionality than Feedvertising. However, Feedvertising is easier to setup. Here's my comparison of the two ad servers:
| Feedvertising | phpAdsNew | |
| Free | yes | yes |
| Works with RSS Feeds | yes | |
| Stats Available | probably not | yes |
| Will Sell Ads for You | yes | no |
| Easy Setup and Configuration | yes | yes, but not as easy as Feedvertising |
| Customization | yes | more customization than Feedvertising |
| Works with Adsense | no | yes on site, but not with RSS |
| Text Ads | yes | yes on site, but not with RSS |
| Javascript Ads | no | yes on site, but not with RSS |
| PHP Ads | no | yes on site, but not with RSS |
| Banner Ads | no | yes on site, but not with RSS |
| Flash Ads | no | yes on site, but not with RSS |
| Affiliate Links | yes | yes |
| Hosted | on TLA server | on your server |
