PageRank from Zero to Six
Posted by Ken Cheung on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 in Google : : 10 commentsI started my daddy blog about five months ago. Like most new sites, my site was placed in Google's sandbox. My page rank was zero for the first four months. Then just like that, my page rank went from zero to six at the end of September. Actually, my page rank alternates between zero and six because the new page rank has not propogated to all of Google's data centers.
I am happy with my new page rank, but I think it's strange it went from zero to six. What happened to one through five? It seems like my page rank should have been one after the first month, then two, then three, and so on to six. Why does it go directly from zero to six?
The answer is that my page rank didn't actually go directly from zero to six. The PageRank value you see in your Google toolbar is only a snap shot of the actual value. Google only updates their toolbar every few months. Internally, PageRank is computed continuously. Not only is the value computed continously, the value isn't limited to integers. For instance, my PageRank of 6 could actually be 5.64, 5.90, 6.12, or 6.4164.

I am a bit confused. Your daddy blog is about 5 months old and it has a page rank 6.
Your izachy blog is about 6 months old, and has more traffic (based traffic information from alexa.com), and it has a page rank 5.
Any idea why? Does the secret of getting a high page rank lie in having a main "theme" for content (meaning, your daddy blog is about parenting, kids, daddy, mummy, kids, kids kids, while your izachy blog has varied topics)
I am kinda new to this, so would like to hear your opinion.
Yich, I also think this blog should have a higher PR than my daddy blog. My daddy blog does have a little more traffic than this site (the Alexa data is skewed by the geeks who visit this site) and I do post more often on my daddy blog. In addition, I also leave comments on parent oriented sites. You have actually given me a good idea for my next post - comparing the two blogs and figure out why my daddy blog has a higher pr. Look for it this week.
You've spotted the flaw in the PageRank system - it isn't a measure of actual site performance, more a measure of potential. You find some very high traffic sites are high up in the search engine results, due to targeted keywords and quality content, but don't have a PageRank because they have few inbound links. Likewise you find some very low traffic sites have a high PageRank because they have a nice flow of internal and external links. PageRank is over-rated anyway - it only comes into play if you intend to sell advertising space.
well, the last time tht google updated its page rank was in june or so. . ..after that there has not been any updates. the next update is said to happen in January or so. so all the best!
Google updates the PR contiguously every time. And every three or four months it updates th PR in google toolbar.

Very intersting and makes sence.
Nice article.

I think your ranking is also based on individual pages. You could rank really well for one page as their is a ton of links pointing to it from other related stories linking to yours.
Versus a page that doesn't rank very well due to the nature of the page and few links.
