YouTube Can Embed Videos

Posted by Ken Cheung on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 in Video : : 14 comments

I finally uploaded a video (29 seconds, avi format, almost 56M) to YouTube and I'm not impressed with the quality. I also uploaded the same video to Google Video and Yahoo Video. As you can see below, not only does Google offer the best static image, they also offer the best playback of the three. However, I have to say I had to look around for the code to embed the Google video on my blog. It was much easier to find the code on YouTube and Yahoo. I also want to point out Yahoo has an annoying search box at the end of the video that takes your visitors away from your site. And for some strange reason, there's no audio. Not sure what I did wrong, but I could not find any info on Yahoo to correct the audio problem.

YouTube, Google Video, and Yahoo Video are great for sharing your videos. They are also great for reducing the load on your server. The last thing you want is to have a super popular video that crashes your server and consumes all of your bandwidth. But if all you want to do is show a video on your blog (a video that won't be a mega-hit), you might want to consider using the Cool Player plugin for WordPress (see fourth video below). The plugin embeds a video player into your post. The plugin does not work right out of the box so you might want to wait until my next post (later this week) when I go some installation tips for the Cool Player plugin.

As I stated before, my 29 second video clip is almost 56 megs. You guys would kill me if I made you download a file that large. So I reduced the resolution (from 640×480 to 320×240) and size (less than 1.4M) with Microsoft Windows Movie Maker. Windows Movie Maker is free but only works with Windows XP. If you are using XP, you might already have it installed on your system. BTW, click on the play button to play the video in the embedded player. If you click on the Captain America link, the video will play on an external player like Microsoft Media Player.

I have one question about this and maybe you know the answer. I can see that you have your own blog and embedded this 3 videos in it, obviously the videos are hosted in youtube, google and yahoo, my question is :

If someone plays these videos, how is the bandwidth counted in terms of hosting (not for the end-client side) ?, is it counted towards your website (hosting company) or is it counted towards youtube, google or yahoo?

    Thank you.

    Waikman,

The bandwidth to play the Google, YouTube, Yahoo videos are not counted against your web hosting bandwidth. It's only counted if the video resides on your site.

hey, cool u ve embedded these videos on ur blog, how to do it on my homepage through the homepage creator on google?

I have never used the Google blog tools before so I don't know. With Wordpress, I just copy and paste the YouTube code into the post.

hi, since i'm using coolplayer my bandwidth increased from 5 mb average to 400 mb per day.
    I use that way:

    [coolplayer download="hide"]
    http://www.redbalcony.com/?vid=19865
    [/coolplayer]

what am i doing wrong? can you help me?

  6. Jamie says:

    oops, that way:
    [kool player download="hide"]
    http://www.redbalcony.com/?vid=19865
    [/kool player]

    *kool player=coolplayer

  7. Ken Cheung says:

I think the download=hide is to hide the download progress bar, not to hide the file. Were you using youtube before coolplayer?

  8. Jamie says:

yes i was using youtube, but now with coolplayer the bandwidth increased a lot, videos are hosted on youtube, not on my server.
    hmmmmm it's cool but expensive

    is there any solution?

    thank you

If bandwidth is an issue, you should keep it on youtube. The media files I post tend to be small so I don't have the same bandwidth problem you do.

Is there a way to put videos on Google Video or Youtube, then embed them on your site, then make it so the only way you can watch the videos is through your site?

  11. Ken Cheung says:

If you don't want to share your video, you can make them private. I have not tried the private option so I'm not sure how it works.

  12. Youtube Video Downloader

A good site for saving Youtube’ s online video is Free Youtube Grabber. In this site, you enter the URL of the page with your chosen video and click“ Get Download URL.” You’ ll then create a URL for the video itself. Click that new link to down…

Are you sure the bandwidth is with YouTube and not your site? I added an embedded YouTube video to my page and within days I had exceeded my bandwidth limit, making me think the bandwidth is still counted against your site, even if it is hosted on YouTube.

Also I believe that making a video private on YouTube means that you can email the link to 25 people only. You have to put in the email addresses into YouTube and it will send them a private invite to view the video.

No, I'm not sure. My thinking is that YouTube videos are downloaded directly from YouTube to the visitor's browser. If the bandwidth counts on your server, that would imply the video is downloaded to your server first, then sent to the visitor's browser. That might be how YouTube works, but that would not be how things are normally done. For instance, when Google Adsense serves an image/video ad on a site, that is usually loaded directly into a visitor's browser instead of sent to your web host and then to the visitor. That would be very ineffiecient.
